Atwood's map, with its distinctive grape leaf border, depicts the region from western Pennsylvania in the east to as far west as Nebraska, as far north as Lake Superior and as far south as the confluence of the Wabash and Ohio Rivers. The map is preceded by a lengthy guide, titled "Ensign & Thayer's Travellers' Guide through the States of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin, with Railroad Canal, Stage, and Steamboat Routes." BLANCHARD, Rufus (1821-1904)

Blanchard's Guide Map of Illinois

Chicago: Rufus Blanchard, 1872. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring. 16pp. publisher's catalogue and ads. Publisher's lettered stiff paper wrappers. Sheet size: 22 x 16 1/2 inches.

Scarce Blanchard guide map of Illinois, in original paper wrappers.

Following the 1871 Chicago fire, Blanchard relocated his shop from Lake Street in the burnt district to nearby Clark Street, and in 1872 began a new series of pocket maps, advertised by him as "Maps in flexible cases with price reduced." His description continues: "For the benefit of those who wish good Maps in a cheap and convenient form, the publisher has issued the following series. Scale, 18 miles to an inch. They show the Counties, Towns and Railroads." Maps of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Kansas and Missouri were issued in this format at the price of 25 cents, significantly less than his other pocket maps advertised for sale. This series of maps is quite uncommon, no doubt suffering a decreased survival rate from their paper wrappers. This copy of the map with Blanchard's catalogue and advertisement mounted to the inside front wrapper.

CHAPMAN, Silas (1813-1899)

Chapman's New Sectional Map of Wisconsin

Milwaukee: S. Chapman; New York: McKenzie & Simmons; Chicago: Bamford & Baldwin, 1860 [Engraved and printed by L. Lipman, Practical Lithography, Milwaukee]. Folding pocket map, printed on two sheets joined, full period hand coloring, ornamental border. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover. (Inked stamp on verso, short repaired tear). Sheet size: 33 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches.

Scarce issue of Chapman's sectional map of Wisconsin depicting the entire state.

First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, Chapman first issued a map depicting the entire state; i.e. using the lower half of his map from 1853 and attaching a second sheet depicting the upper half. New surveys, particularly in the northwest part of the territory, prompted this 1860 issue, with substantive changes to counties, railroads, etc. The addition of New York and Chicago publishers suggest that Chapman attempted to market this map to a wider audience.

CHAPMAN, Silas (1813-1899)

Chapman's Sectional Map of Minnesota

Milwaukee: Silas Chapman, 1856. Colored folding map, 29¾ x 23½ inches. Bound into original 16mo. brown cloth folder, gilt-lettered cover. Folder slightly worn and faded. Slight foxing on map. Colors on map generally bright and clean. Overall very good.

A variant state of this important Minnesota map, without priority, published in as many as five versions in 1856. Many of the counties west of St. Paul are unidentified or shown in their earlier, larger incarnations, and the region along the north shore of Lake Superior is unmapped. This edition was published by Silas Chapman himself, who produced several pocket maps of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Chapman's maps were reproduced later by other publishers. While some 1856 versions of the map fail to show important geographic features shown here, such as Lake Minnetonka, the present map omits features that appear on other versions, such as the Sioux reservation in Goodhue and Wabasha counties and Houston county, indicating the present version is among the earlier states.

Not in Phillips Maps. Rumsey 1662; Checklist of Printed Maps of the Middle West to 1900 (Minnesota), p.124.

CHAPMAN, Silas (1813-1899)

Chapman's Sectional Map of Wisconsin

Milwaukee & New York: Dyer & Passmore (Milwaukee) and A.S. Barnes (New York), 1857. Folding pocket map lithographed by F. Mayer & Co., full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Folds into original brown cloth-covered boards, blocked in blind on covers, lettered in gilt on upper cover. A lovely map, brightly coloured, in very good condition. Sheet size: 35 1/4 x 31 3/4 inches.

Rare issue of Chapman's map of Wisconsin and the first to depict the entire state.

First issued in 1853, with successive editions in 1855 and 1856, Chapman's pocket map of Wisconsin depicted the southern half of the state, i.e. the area surveyed at the time of the map's publication. In 1857, the present issue was published, extending the map northward via a joined second sheet to depict the entire state. A publisher's advertisement from 1857 shows the map being offered for sale either as just the "south part" (at $.50) or the "whole state" ($1.00).

Each county is individually coloured, with most in the north part of the state still oversized and empty of settlement. Townships and sections are also shown. Several Indian reservations are also laid down, including those of the Menominee and Oneida, and the many railroad lines in the state are identified. Silas Chapman produced several maps of the Midwest from the 1850s through the 1870s, including pocket and wall maps of Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. After partnering briefly with the printer Philetus C. Hale, he set up on his own in 1850: it was during this period that his most important maps were published.

Early issue of Chapman's sectional map of Wisconsin, here in full period color.
