COLTON, George W. (1827-1901) & Charles B. (1832-1916)

Colton's Kentucky and Tennessee

New York: G.W. & C.B. Colton, 1866. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring, ornamental border. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover, Colton ad on the front pastedown. Provenance: S.S. Tuttle, Esq. (early booklabel on the front pastedown). Sheet size: 17 7/8 x 26 inches.

Detailed post-Civil War map of Kentucky and Tennessee.

With the Civil War over, Colton map production began again in earnest to meet the rising demand for maps of a nation rebuilding. Tennessee, in particular, was devastated by the war, seeing more battles than any other state other than Virginia. Railroads, many rebuilt or newly constructed following the war, are shown across the region, indicative of the rapid economic development. In the west, the eastern parts of Missouri and Arkansas are shown.

CRAM, George F. (1841-1928)

Cram's Rail Road & Township Map of Kentucky and Tennessee

Chicago: George F. Cram, 1879. Folding pocket map, full period hand-colouring, township divisions and names of railroad lines printed in color. 32pp. index mounted to the front pastedown. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, title stamped in gilt on the upper cover. Sheet size: 20 x 29 1/4 inches.

Unusual pocket map by Cram of Kentucky and Tennessee

Cram was among the first of the larger map publishers to make use of printing in colour. On this map, while townships are hand coloured in the usual array of pink, green and yellow washes, the township boundaries are printed in red and the names of the railroads crossing the area are likewise printed in the same colour. The combined coloring creates a highly decorative map of the region.

FINLEY, Anthony (c.1790-1840)

Tennessee

Philadelphia: A. Finley, [ca. 1830]. Folding pocket map engraved by Young & Delleker, full contemporary hand-colouring. Folds into publisher's roan covers, covers bordered in blind, upper cover titled in gilt, publisher's ad on the inside front pastedown. (Minor separations at intersecting folds as usual). Sheet size: 8 3/4 x 11 3/8 inches.

Rare separately-issued Finley pocket map of Tennessee.

Following the initial publications of both his New General Atlas and New American Atlas, Finley issued pocket map versions of many of his maps from those important early American atlases. This map of Tennessee appears to be printed from the same plate as his map of Tennessee which appeared in Finley's New General Atlas of 1831, with the addition of rivers and place names to the neighboring states not found in early editions of the New General Atlas, The map was certainly issued before 1835, as neither Benton nor Lauderdale counties appear on the map. Although diminutive in size, the map still shows good detail, including principal towns, roads, and rivers, and with each county identified. In the southeast corner of the state, a large area of Cherokee lands is depicted.

Little is known of Anthony Finley, other than his published work 'but he was probably born around 1790. Judging from contributors to his atlases, he apparently moved in the same Philadelphia circles of engravers and compilers as other contemporary publishers' (Ristow, p.268).

NORMAN, Benjamin Moore (1809-1860)

Norman's Plan of New Orleans & Environs

[New Orleans]: B. M. Norman, 1854 [lithographed by G. Hayward, New York]. Lithographed folding pocket map, printed on blue paper, period hand-colouring in outline. 86 numbered references in the lower margin. Folds into publisher's blindstamped cloth covers, upper cover titled in gilt. Provenance: J. S. Ozanne (signature on front pastedown dated 1854); Mrs. P. M. Ozanne (signature dated 1894). Sheet size: 14 7/8 x 19 inches.

Rare issue of the most famous mid-19th century plan of New Orleans.

This seminal 19th century plan of New Orleans was first issued by Norman in 1845. In the present 1854 issue, Norman has made significant updates to the plan and has removed the credit to original draughtman Henry Moellhausen. Moellhausen was an important early surveyor and architect in New Orleans, particularly active in the 1840s, and is noted as the co-author of one of the early reports advocating an underground drainage system in the city.

In the 1845 issue of the plan, the city is divided into three municipalities, dividing the American and Creole sections of the city as per an 1836 ordinance issued to resolve the tension between the French-Creole and Anglo populations. In 1852, this system was revised and the present 1854 issue of the plan shows the city now divided into four districts and nine wards, the former shown via pink lines and the latter via green. The numbered references in the lower margin identify the city's principal hotels, banks, churches, schools, theatres, hospitals, markets, cotton presses (an apt depiction of the importance of this industry to the city), and public buildings. These references show additional changes from the 1845 issue, with new churches and hotels now added. The City of La Fayatte no longer appears on the map having been replaced by the Fourth District. In that district, the Lafayette and Lake Pontchartrain Railroad is now shown, as is a protected levee, a drainage canal and a "Draining Machine" in the northwestern portion of the district. Along the western side of the Mississippi, a "new levee" appears. On the eastern side, two New Orleans & Opelousas Railroad depots are now depicted, as is the newly laid out Belle Ville, east of Algiers.

This issue is quite rare, with only one extant copy cited by OCLC.

TENNESSEE. - Griffith Morgan HOPKINS (publisher)

City of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Vicinity

Chattanooga and Philadelphia: T.H. Payne & Co. and Griffith Morgan Hopkins, 1889. Folding pocket map printed in dark blue, full period hand colouring. Folds into original oatmeal card wrappers, titled on the upper cover, advertisement on the lower. (Separations at folds). Sheet size: 19 x 23 inches.

Unusual 19th century pocket map of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Chattanooga bookseller T. H. Payne & Co. published this attractive map, showing the city centered on Union station with the surrounding four mile radius. The various sections of the city are all individually coloured, all streets are named and numerous railroads and "electric" railroads criss-cross the city. In the lower left corner, Lookout Mountain is shown, and Payne's advertisement on the rear cover advertises view and guidebooks to the Civil War battlefield. The map was printed by Hopkins, who in the same year issued his Atlas of the City of Chattanooga, which included this map as the Index sheet. This pocket map version, however, was separately published for promotional use by Payne, the city's leading bookseller and stationer.
