COMPANY SCHOOL, circa 1800-1830
Bean plant with flowers and bean pods
Original watercolour on laid paper. Ink inscription in Arabic script to upper left and right corners (nine small tears with resultant holes to paper, two other small marginal tears). Framed size: 27 x 23 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 17 x 11 inches.
The so-called Company School grew up in India in answer to the demand for watercolours of a high quality of the beautiful and varied flora and fauna of the region. Traditionally trained native artists adapted their styles to the taste of the new British patrons (generally employees of the east India Company) and produced a great many beautiful watercolours in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The majority of the artists are now anonymous, but one gifted artist whose name is known is Shaikh Zain ud-Din of Patna, who worked for Lady Impey in Calcutta in the 1770s.
