A sweeping view of Lord Harrington's wood at Petersham, by the eminent engraver Anthony Walker after a drawing by Jean Baptiste Chatelain.

This arresting view of Lord Harrington's wood at Petersham, is one of the most desirable engravings by Anthony Walker after John Baptiste Chatelain. Walker, along with such noted engravers as Benazech, contributed his skills to a series of English views after delicate drawings by Chatelain. This pretty view is a superb example of both Walker's talents and Chatelain's draftsmanship. Walker studied drawing at the St. Martin's Lane Academy, and was instructed in engraving by John Tinney. He was a clever artist, and became well known for his small book illustrations. In addition to his superior landscape prints, he engraved a number of plates for the publisher John Boydell, many of which were exhibited at the Incorporated Society of Artists between 1763 and 1765.

Jean Baptiste Chatelain was regarded as one of the best French landscape engravers in London. Between 1741 and 1743, he was employed by Arthur Pond on his ambitious set of "44 Italian Landscapes" which are remembered today for their delicate and refined effect. As well as working as a printmaker, he was in demand as a teacher and draughtsman. He made many fine landscape drawings, several of which are in the British Museum. On occasion he aided the topographers Samuel and Nathaniel Buck by providing preliminary drawings for their panoramic views.
