COMPANY SCHOOL, China, early-19th century
[Watercolour of peonies and a bird]
Shanghai: circa 1820. Pen, ink, watercolour and bodycolour. Chinese paper, laid down onto a backing sheet (light surface damage , old crease marks). Sheet size: 15 9/16 x 10 1/4 inches.
A vibrant company school painting of peonies executed in the early nineteenth century.
A beautifully composed image, in a style that recalls the traditional Chinese compositions, whilst also making allowances for the differing Western taste of the European patrons who supported a striving school of highly talented natural histiory artists in Shanghai at the turn of the nineteenth century
