COLTON, G.W., and C.B. COLTON

Colton's Map of the States and Territories West of the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean showing the overland routes, the projected railroad lines, &c

New York: G.W. and C.B. Colton & Co., 1873. Lithographed map, with full original colour, 29 1/2 x 43 1/2 inches, folding into original dark brown cloth binding, covers with elaborate blind-stamped design, the upper cover titled in gilt, paper pastedowns, the pastedown on the upper cover printed with publisher's advertisements.

A very fine pocket map of the trans-Mississippi West, including prospective railroad routes

By the 1870s the Colton firm was among the most successful names in American commercial cartography, owing primarily to its excellent maps, but also to its lavish and decorative presentation. The present map remains a fine example of the later Colton style, and includes all of America west of the Mississippi.
