London: Published by Thomas Hart, Mar. 6, 1776. Mezzotint. In excellent condition. Image size: 12 3/4 x 10 inches. Plate mark: 14 x 10 inches. Sheet size: 14 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches.
A lovely impression of this early print of David Wooster, a hero of the American Revolution, and commander of the Connecticut forces.
Public curiosity for prints of Revolutionary heroes was not limited to America but spread to the English and European print shops, where an inquisitive audience clamored for a glimpse of the key figures of the war. London publishers, using the names C. Shepard, Thomas Hart, and John Morris, issued a series of mezzotints of the officers of the American Revolution, one of which is this stunning print of David Wooster an influential Patriot leader. Wooster was a noted military leader during the French and Indian War, but upon the outbreak of the Revolution he resigned his British commission and joined the Continental army. He was appointed one of the eight brigadier-generals, third in rank, and served in Canada, where he led Connecticut troops during the Quebec campaign. Wooster lost his life rallying his troops in the battle near Danbury, Connecticut, but the memory of his brave leadership and ultimate heroism lives on today. This remarkable print is a wonderful early document of this period in America's history, it not only depicts this remarkable man, but it demonstrates a distinctly European view of the War of Independence.
