WALTON, After Henry (1746-1813)

The Fruit-Barrow

London: J.R.Smith, 6 March 1780. Mezzotint by John Raphael Smith. Image size (including text): 18 3/16 x 13 3/4 inches. Sheet size: 25 1/2 x 18 3/8 inches.

A very fine impression of this charming image: the central figure is said to be a self-portrait of the artist.

The original painting was exhibited originally at the Royal Academy in 1779, where it was titled 'A group of figures with a fruit barrow'. The original is now in the collection of Sir Reresby Sitwell and is also known as 'The Cherry Barrow'. 1779 proved to be the last year that Walton worked as an artist, he subsequently retired from London to his farm in Suffolk where he produced a small number of portraits for private commissions but chiefly advised on the formation of collections and dealt in art. A contemporary commentator noted that he had been informed that the figures in the scene were the artist, Miss Carr and the artist's nephews and niece. This image is consequently also known as 'The Walton family'.
