CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, circa 1770
[Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata)]
[circa 1770]. Watercolour and bodycolour, on laid paper, watermarked 'IV'. Sheet size: 9 1/8 x 14 7/8 inches.
An accurate depiction of a Muscovy Duck with a charming naïveté.
The Muscovy is a native of Brazil but has long been domesticated and is indeed the only domestic duck not derived from Mallard stock. It is found in a great many colour premutations but the one distinguishing feature that remains constant is the extraordinary area of red skin around the eyes and over the beak. The present image is on continental paper and is stylistically similar to work being produced in Germany in the 1770s.
