CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, circa 1770
[Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)]
[circa 1770]. Watercolour and bodycolour, on laid paper, watermarked 'IV'. Sheet size: 15 1/16 x 9 3/4 inches.
A fine image of a Collared Dove with a charming naïveté.
The spread of the Collared Dove is one of the great success stories of the 20th century. At the start of the 20th century this species was found primarily on the Indian subcontinent, although its range extended slightly into Europe in Turkey. In the early 1900s, however, the species began expanding its range significantly and by 1950 had reached the British Isles, and today Collared Doves are living in the Americas and above the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia The present image is on continental paper and is stylistically similar to work being produced in Germany in the 1770s.
