CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, circa 1770

[Woodchat Shrike (Larius senator)]

[circa 1770]. Watercolour and bodycolour, on laid paper, watermarked 'IV'. Sheet size: 15 1/4 x 9 5/8 inches.

An accurate depiction of a Woodchat Shrike with a charming naïveté.

The Woodchat Shrike is a summer visitor to much of Europe, but is most usually found in the countries bordering the Mediterranean, olive groves and forests of cork oak are its preferred environment. Further north open woodland is favoured. Winter is spent in Africa south of the Sahara in open bush country. A predator, it feeds on insects and small birds and mammals. The present image is on continental paper and is stylistically similar to work being produced in Germany in the 1770s.
