Charles Hodges was born in London and was a pupil of John Raphael Smith. He worked from 1788 as a print dealer between the London and Amsterdam markets, settling permanently in Amsterdam in 1794.
Henry Chalon, coincidentally, was born in London to Dutch parents - his father, Jan Chalon, was an etcher. In 1793, Chalon was given the honorary title of Animal Painter to the Dutchess of York. He specialized in horses and dogs, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1792 until shortly before his death.
