SEYMOUR, After James (1702?-1752)
The Chaise Match... La Course de Chaise
[London: circa 1780]. Engraving, with later professional hand-colouring. Cut to edge of plate-mark. Sheet size: 13 11/16 x 18 inches.
A rare print recording a race against the clock when Wright's carriage travelled 19 miles in fifty three minutes and 27 seconds: an average of 22 miles an hour.
This extraordinary 'carriage' was built for the Duke of Queensberry and the Earl of Eglinton. They had bet Theobald Taaffe and Andrew Sprowle 1000 guineas that they could not get a carriage 'with four running wheels, and a person in, or upon it, drawn by four horses' to travel nineteen miles in one hour. The print is in two halves: the top shows a view of the carriage at speed, the lower section is a plan of the carriage. The signature 'J. Wright Invt.' implies that he was the designer of the carriage. This print appears to be the rare precursor to a later aquatint, published by J. Bodger.

SEYMOUR, After James (circa 1702-1752)
(Othello when the Property of Mr. Routh) Now Black & all Black the Property of Sr. Ralph Gore Bart. He beat Bajezet a Horse belonging to the Earl of March for 1000 Guineas on the Curragh of Keldare in the Kingdom of Ireland the 5th. of September 1751
London: C Dicey & Co, [circa 1780]. Line engraving. Image size (including text): 6 3/8 x 10 3/8 inches. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 15 3/8 inches.
A fine copy of this early image of a Thoroughbred race-horse by Seymour, one of the great early equestrian artists.
Seymour was one of the first British field sport artists. His rough, direct portrayals suggest an artist schooled by experience, which was the case, according to Siltzer, who wrote, he "only took to art to make a living after a short but unfortunate career on the Turf." (Siltzer, p. 245) There is an appealing lack of refinement in Seymour's work. His work was done during the early days of British horse racing.
