Observations d'un Catholique sur l'Histoire du Canada par l'Honorable William Smith. (Extrait de la Gazette Quebec du 11 Janvier 1827)
[Quebec]: 1827. 8vo. 13, pp.
Full green morocco, bound by Riviere and Son, spine lettered in gilt, gilt dentelles and edges
Provenance: R. Armour Jr., Clerk to the Legislative Council; Sir Robert Leicester Harmsworth (pencil notation on the front endpaper concerning provenance)
Rare separately-issued critique of Smith's History of Canada.
Using the pseudonym Vindex this scarce pamphlet is a vigorous riposte to William Smith's 1826 History of Canada written by Abbe Thomas Maguire. His impassioned polemic addresses Smith's perceived attack on the Roman Catholic church in Canada, and his liberal British Protestant agenda.
This copy from the famed library of R.L. Harmsworth, with his pencil note signed with initials on the front pastedown: "From the Coll'n of R. Armour Jr., Clerk to the Legislative Council."
