[Skagway, Alaska: 1905-1907]. 10 silver print photographs, 7 titled, dated and with photographer's imprint in the negative. Markings on verso suggesting they were used in the early 20th century for a French publication. Each approximately 9x7 inches.

Rare photographs by a noted early Alaskan studio.

Horace Herbert Draper (1855-1913) and William Howard Case (1868-1920) were active photographers from 1898 to circa 1908 in Skagway and Juneau, Alaska. By 1907, the partnership of Case & Draper dissolved, with Draper retaining possession of the business in Skagway, while Case opened a new business in Juneau. Work from the studio of Case & Draper stands out from that of their contemporaries. Their images resound with a sense of majesty, and the use of dark backgrounds and the technique of using raking light, i.e., "Rembrandt"-style lighting, displays a particular artistic sensibility to their studio portraits. The images here comprise, with titles as per negative (7) or supplied (3): 1) Jaorge-Sha-Wut. 2) Thlinget Woman from Hoonah. 3) A Taku Potlatch Dancer. 4) Kaw-Claa. A Thlinget Maiden from Chilkat. 5) Winter Costume of a Eskimo Girl. 6) Native Basket Weaver. 7) Chief Ka-Ann Totem Pole. Ketchikan, Alaska. 8) [Totem Pole, Ketchikan, Alaska]. 9) [Totem Poles and overturned canoe]. 10) [Native Alaskan art and artifacts].
