[Forestry] A chromolithographed and manuscript charter for the Toledo, Ohio, branch or 'court' of the Order of Independent Foresters
Toronto: Toronto Lithographing Co. Ltd, [dated 7 December 1904 in manuscript]. Lithographed and manuscript text within elaborate chromolithographic surround. Overall toning, some expert small repaired tears. Sheet size: 30 7/8 x 23 1/8 inches.
A very fine example of the chromolithographer's art.
This exuberant example of turn-of-the-20th-century design, incorporating many symbolic elements - some of a general nature (personifications of Liberty, Justice, Benevolence and Truth), others of a more specific nature - the moose's head, the horn, bow and arrows, etc.
This is a relatively early example of an Independent Order of Foresters charter - the Order originated in New Jersey in 1874 as a mutual benefit society. Currently, the majority of its over one million members are from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The charter is largely lithographic - only the date, the fourteen names of the 'First Staff of Officers' and details of the name and location of the Toledo 'court' are in manuscript.
