TREW, Christoph Jakob (1695-1769) - Johann Elias HAID (1730-1809) after Ant. GRAFF
Joannes Jacobus Haidius pictor et chalcographus
[Nuremberg]: 1768. Mezzotint, on laid paper. Sheet size: 20 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Plate mark: 15 1/2 x 10 3/8 inches.
A striking mezzotint portrait of Johann Jakob Haid, by Haid's son and business partner, after the 1766 original portrait by Graff.
Johann Jakob Haid came from a German family of artists and printmakers. Haid worked initially with the animal painter Johann Elias Ridinger, but he soon went on to found a well-known publishing house in Augsburg. This portrait is from a series which pictured those most closely involved in the publication of Trew's Plantae Selectae, and was originally bound into that great botanical work.
