Three Dissertations on Boylston Prize Questions for the Years 1806 and 1807

Boston: Farrand, Mallory & Co., 1808. 8vo. 8 1/2 x 5 inches. 192 pp., four pages of publisher's advertisements.

Contemporary calf, spine and boards gilt, leather label. Binding lightly worn.

Scarce collection of early American medical essays by a noted Harvard physician. Topics addressed include gallstones, gangrene, and various skin conditions.

Three prize-winning medical dissertations by George Cheyne Shattuck, Boston physician, President of the Massachusetts Medical Society, and the man responsible for the Shattuck Professorship of Pathological Anatomy at Harvard Medical School. The work is dedicated to Ward Nicholas Boylston, the originator of the prize at Harvard University. This copy was purchased with other books from Boylston's private library and is probably his copy. The binding suggests it might have been a presentation copy, with elaborate gilt ruling on the spine and gilt border on the front and back boards.
