P. J. REDOUTÉ, Peintre de Fleurs
Paris: 1811. Engraved on chine collé by C. S. Pradier. Sheet size: 13 x 9 1/2 inches. Plate mark: 10 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches.
A handsome engraved portrait of the great flower portraitist
Redouté was at the zenith of his career when this portrait was published. Nearing completion of the magnificent Les Liliacées , he was patronised by the Empress Josephine, friends with the leading actors and artists of the day and well acquainted with high society. This is a degree of success unusual for botanical artists, and we can see one of the reasons for it in the personal charm he displays in this portrait. The other ingredient, of course, was the wonderful, translucent paintings and engravings of flowers he did, among the finest ever done.
