VAN DER AA, Pieter (1659-1733)
Nouvelle Carte de l'Amerique
Leiden: [circa 1720]. Copper-engraved map. (Expert restoration along the side margins). Sheet size: 18 x 21 1/4 inches.
Decorative early 18th century map with California as an island.
This map was first issued in the German edition of Montanus's De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld in 1671. "The map [i.e. the plate] was later acquired by Pieter Van der Aa and used in at least two of his works ... Van der Aa altered the plate removing the decorative cartouches and applying an entirely new one containing the title top left. There are various territories of the natives identified and one or two minor alterations of nomenclature" (Burden). Cartographically, the map follows the Visscher map of 1658, with California as an island and a large open lake in the place of the western Great Lakes.
