Three-quarter length portrait of General Lee in full dress uniform with sword
Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) is probably the most revered soldier in American history, and he epitomised many soldierly virtues. The calm dignity of his bearing, which comes through clearly in all the images of him, is especially well communicated in this photogravure by an unknown photographer, taken in 1863.
