A rare account of Swiss colonization in America.

An extremely rare promotional pamphlet describing the Swiss colony of Alpina in upper New York state, founded in 1842 by Philippe Suchard and Charles-Louis Favarger. Alpina was established as an industrial and agricultural colony, with the specific task of extracting valuable minerals and encouraging Swiss emigration to America. The text describes the history of the colony, prints letters from numerous colonists, including M. Ch. Vicarino, as well as extracts from Tocqueville, Bristed, et al. This copy lacks the plate of the log house, and two of the three maps. The map of New York only is present here. The NUC, which attributes the work to H.M. Malten, locates only a photocopy at Yale, made from the copy in the Stadtbibliothek, Zurich.
