Contemporary tree calf, flat spine divided into six compartments, red morocco lettering piece in the second, the others with an overall decoration in gilt
Rare text volume to accompany Forbin's great illustrated work on the Levant.
Limited to 325 copies and issued in folio with 80 plates, Forbin's Voyage dans le Levant was "one of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale" (Blackmer). Rarely found with the plates, however, is the present accompanying octavo text. Authorized to purchase antiquities for the Louvre, Forbin travelled to Greece, Constantinople, Acre, Jaffa, Bethlehem, Jericho, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem, Rama, Gaza, Cairo and Egypt. This copy without pages 433-460, the explanation of the plates, and evidently issued without them.
