John Speed was one of the best known English mapmakers in the early modern period. He first had a career as a tailor, which he worked as until he was able to make a living from being a scholar. He made his first maps in the 1590s and entered the trade when he was almost 60 years old. His maps were widely used even years after his death, and, due to their many printings, became the basis for world maps throughout the 18th century.
