Eighteenth century manuscript sailing directions to North American waters.
The manuscript sailing directions start at "Montook point" (i.e. Montauk, Long Island) and go to Gay Head ("SW part of Martha's Vineyard") and thence to Newport, Nantucket and so on, giving the distance in leagues for each section of the voyage in a hand-ruled margin at the edge of each page. The manuscript was discovered in the papers of Admiral Sir John Duckworth (1748-1817), who served in America in 1777, and later as commander-in-chief of the Leeward Islands station, Jamaica and Newfoundland.
