Russell was the president of the Society for propagating the Gospel, the Charitable Fire Society, the Agricultural Society, the Boston Chamber of Commerce, and the National Bank in Boston, and a number of other associations. He died in Boston in 1796, and this eulogy was delivered a month later, before the many societies of which he was a member.
