Indian Chiefs

London: John Weale, 1860. Colour-printed lithograph, by Kell Brothers. Sheet size: 10 3/8 x 13 7/8 inches.

Lovely colour-lithographed image of this autumnal Canadian scene.

Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872), born in Amsterdam, came to North America in 1837 and served in the U.S.Army (where his abilities as a topographical artist were noted) against the Seminole Indians in Florida. By 1847 he was in Canada, when he took part in an exhibition in Montreal. Canada struck a cord with Krieghoff, and for much of the rest of his working life he recorded both the landscape and the people, particularly the Fnerench Canadians of Quebec province and the Indian tribes. This image extracted from Hodges's Construction of the Great Victoria Bridge in Canada (London:1860).
