A biography of an African American slave, written and published in an unusual phonic orthography.

Silvia Dubois was an African-American woman born into slavery in 1788 or 1789 in New Jersey and who became free in 1808 after striking her slave mistress over a dispute relating to the cleaning of a bar-room floor. After gaining her freedom, Dubois lived near Sourland Mountain with her children until her death in 1888 (her age given on the title being incorrect). Evidently written and published by Larison to promote his Academy of Science and Art in Ringos, New Jersey, he interviewed Dubois three times in preparation of this biography, written in his unique system of phonetic orthography.
