Checkley, a Boston bookseller, was an active supporter of the Church of England in Massachusetts Bay, and a champion of the lawful rights of its members. His distribution of an Anglican tract entitled "A Short and Easie Method with the Deists" in 1723 put him in hot water in New England. It was sold by Checkley at his bookstore, leading to his prosecution and conviction for libel in Boston in 1724.
