Water's Edge

Lyme, Connecticut: Callaway Editions Inc, 1980. Small folio. (13 1/2 x 11 inches). First edition. 48 duo-tone plates, laser-scanned directly from the original photographs and printed in 300-line screen offset lithography.

Beige publisher's cloth with gilt title. Fine copy.

A photographic exploration of the water's edge, 40 years in the making. Featuring an introductory poem by award-winning poet A.R. Ammons and an afterword composed of edited conversations between Callahan and the publisher.

Callahan was widely respected in the photography community for his open mind and experimental attitude, qualities reinforced by his association with Moholy-Nagy and the principles of Bauhaus design. This book is a collection of photographs taken around various bodies of water, Callahan's favorite subject. The forty-eight duo-tone photographs were taken between 1941 and 1980, primarily in Cape Cod but also in more surprising places, such as Detroit and Chicago.
