Lavish edition of the largest book made for the Roxburghe Club.

1 of 300 copies presented to the club by South African businessman Harry F. Oppenheimer, of which 160 were for sale, this being one of 120 copies for sale bound in buckram. Contains the text of William Phillips's English translation of The Itinerario published in London by John Wolfe (1598) with the images and maps from the original Itinerario published in Amsterdam, all reproduced at original size. Paired with an uncolored facsimile with color title of Icones, Habitus Gestusque Indorum ac Lusitanorum per Indiam Viventium published in Amsterdam by Cornelium Nicolai (1604) present and laid into rear pocket. Prefaced with a text written by Oppenheimer and a foreword by Ernst van den Boogaart, author of Civil and Corrupt Asia: Image and Text in the Intinerario and the Icones of Jan Huygen Van Linschoten (University of Chicago Press: 2002). Copies of the original edition of The Intinerario are rare. This Roxburghe edition is particularly valuable not only for its splendid reproductions of the plates with original color, but for the fascinating text printed in English. "This important work contains all the knowledge and learning related to the East and West Indies and navigations to those parts that was available at the end of the sixteenth century. It was held in such high esteem that for nearly a century a copy was given to each ship sailing to India as a guide to the sailing directions." [Hill] Linschoten traveled extensively, he went to Goa between 1583 and 1589 and joined Willem Barents's first and second voyages into the Kara Sea in 1594 and 1595. He combined his first-hand accounts with translations of original Spanish and Portuguese documents. "Linschoten's work, along with Hakluyt's, served as a direct stimulus to the building of the vast English and Dutch overseas empires." [Hill]
