A substantial album of finely executed British Army uniform studies.
The album comprises 65 watercolour studies of British Army officers, each carefully posed to display the details of full-dress uniform, headgear, sword, belt, sash, sabretache, plume, epaulettes, facings, lace, and other regimental distinctions. The drawings are worked over pencil, with touches of gum arabic used to heighten metallic ornament and polished surfaces. Their scale, finish, and systematic presentation suggest work made for close study of military dress, either as preparatory material, a working corpus of uniform designs, or a carefully assembled contemporary or later reference album. Eschauzier is best known for his association with Léon Mansion in Officers of the British Army. The present album contains 65 drawings, and its interest lies in the immediacy of the original watercolour medium: the colours, textures, and small uniform details are rendered with a precision often softened or regularised in lithographic reproduction. As a group, the drawings form a rich visual record of British Army dress during the late Georgian and early William IV period, when elaborate full-dress uniforms remained central to regimental identity and public military display. Provenance: Royal bookplate of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), with crown and entwined initials HG, the name GLOUCESTER and his 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' motto to front paste down.
