A fine copy of a catalogue of important prints from the Colonial and early national eras from the Winterthur Museum's collection. Organized by categories which include maps, landscapes, portraits, historical events, social satire, juvenile instruction, architecture, and many other subjects.

The first part of the book deals with prints produced for the American market, while the second half covers prints made in America. Essays discuss printmaking techniques and developments. There is an informative essay which discusses the role of prints in American society, as well as an analysis of the variety of prints produced in America and the consistencies among prints exported for the American market. The function of prints as household decorations is also considered. The book is organized into topical categories of prints: maps, landscapes, portraits, genre scenes, emblematic and allegorical prints, political prints, and others. There are 32 color and 391 black and white illustrations. Includes a selected Bibliography and Index of Artists, Printmakers, and Printsellers. xiv, 32 color plates, 543.
