Album of Views in India

c. 1865-1890. 4to. (13 7/8 x 12 inches). 68 mounted albumen photographs, many with negative numbers in the image, some captioned in pencil.

Full dark blue morocco, spine lettered and lined gilt, textured endpapers

A richly composed album documenting colonial India through the lenses of its two most celebrated nineteenth-century photographers, with an unusually large proportion of images devoted to Delhi and Lucknow.

This substantial album of sixty-eight mounted albumen prints brings together the work of Samuel Bourne, co-founder of Bourne & Shepherd and the pre-eminent early interpreter of India's architectural and topographical grandeur, and Raja Lala Deen Dayal, the foremost Indian photographer. Bourne's technically exacting, classically composed views predominate, ranging across major northern centers and hill stations and including a notably extensive sequence from Delhi. In that group, Bourne records the city's principal monuments and vistas with exceptional breadth: the Chandni Chowk; the Jama Masjid (including the mosque and quadrangle, and panoramic prospects taken from its heights); the Pearl Mosque within the Red Fort; Humayun's Tomb and the surrounding necropolis; the Chaunsat Khamba; the Qutb Minar with its Great Arch and Iron Pillar, as well as close studies of its sculptural carving; the Kashmir Gate; and the outworks of Tughlaqabad. In the later portion of the volume, Dayal's signed and attributed prints register the transition to an Indian-led, courtly and administrative photographic practice, blending European and subcontinental visual conventions with documentary precision. Read as a whole, the album offers both a pan-Indian survey and a concise history of nineteenth-century photographic practice on the subcontinent, from the expeditionary and archaeological eye of the 1860s to the ceremonially inflected vision of the 1880s and 1890s.
