Item #5239 Meteora. John WHESSELL, 1760-.

[WHESSELL, John (1760-circa 1823)]

Meteora

London: Edward Orme, 1 March 1809. Line and stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Whessell (some neat repairs, two touching image area). Image size (including text): 14 3/8 x 19 3/8 inches. Sheet size: 16 3/8 x 20 1/2 inches.

A fine example of Whessell's work, who both painted and engraved this image, print number 7 from his 'Portraits of Celebrated Running Horses' series, here re-printed by Orme

Whessell issued eight plates in this series between 1806 and 1808. All eight were republished by Edward Orme in 1809. "John Whessell was both an engraver and painter of some ability. Since he engraved many of his own paintings, a superior skill in the former department may have 'improved' any faults he may have had in oils... Whessell seems to have lived in London for most of his life... Principally as an engraver, but also as a painter, Whessell must have been a successful artist during his life, of which we know so little." (Lane British Racing Prints p.182)
