HERRING, After Benjamin, junior (1830-1871)

The Run In

London: G.P. McQueen, 27 February 1875. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Charles Hunt & Sons. Image size (including text): 13 3/4 x 23 1/4 inches. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 30 inches.

A fine copy of the second issue of this spirited image (first published 22 April 1873) from the 'McQueen's Steeple Chasings' series.

The final scene: a close finish between three horses all being pushed to gain that extra yard as the winning post approaches. The series includes four prints: Restive at the Post; Over the Fence in Good Style; Green-Sleeves leads the Way and the present image. "Ben Herring Jnr... was an accomplished artist. As well as supplying portraits of race horses and pictures of racing to a number of periodicals and for books, aquatint plates after his work were published by J. and later G.P. McQueen. These 'composite' scenes of racing provide a valuable and accurate portrayal of the leading horses and jockeys of the years between 1860 and 1875" (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p. 121).

Lane British Racing Prints p.130.
