PREVOST, Jean Louis (active circa 1760-circa 1810)
[Still-life of Flowers in a Basket, on a Shelf with two books] Trente-deuxième Cahier de Fleurs. Desinées d'apès Nature, par Prevost le Jeune, et Gravées par A.P. Teillard
Paris: Jean, [no date but circa 1820]. Stipple engraving, printed in brown, coloured by hand, by A.P. Teillard. Sheet size: 16 1/8 x 10 3/4 inches.
A charming image from the greatest era of French botanical illustration.
This carefully composed composition shows a basket full of roses, lilac, carnations and daisies placed on a mantle-shelf. Beside are a number of rose buds which are prevented from falling from the shelf by the combined weight of two leatherbound books, one a volume from the works of Voltaire.
